Capital Culture

What is cultural capital?

National Curriculum: ‘It is the essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said and helping to engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.’

1 - Personal Development

At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, personal development is a cornerstone of our approach to nurturing resilient, confident, and successful lifelong learners. We place great emphasis on knowing, valuing, and loving every child as an individual, rooted in our Catholic ethos that recognises each child as created in God’s image. Through a curriculum enriched with opportunities to build self-awareness, emotional intelligence, metacognitive skills, and independence, pupils learn to reflect on their own progress and embrace challenges with resilience. We provide pastoral support and strong relationships to help children from disadvantaged or difficult backgrounds overcome barriers, ensuring that all pupils are equipped with the personal skills to thrive not only academically but in their wider lives.

2 - Social Development, including political and current affairs awareness

Sacred Heart fosters social development by encouraging pupils to understand their role within their families, school, local community, and the wider world. Our diverse pupil population benefits from a curriculum and school culture that promotes mutual respect, inclusivity, and an understanding of different cultures and beliefs, reflective of our multi-cultural community in Leigh. Pupils engage actively in school life through pupil leadership and school council roles, which develop their voice and democratic awareness. We also integrate age-appropriate discussions on current affairs, British values, and social justice issues, enabling pupils to develop a sense of responsibility, fairness, and an informed perspective on political and societal matters.

3 - Physical Development

Physical development at Sacred Heart is supported through a broad and balanced curriculum that includes regular and varied physical education, promoting health, fitness, and well-being. We ensure pupils access opportunities to develop coordination, strength, and healthy lifestyles, which are vital foundations for lifelong physical and mental wellness. Our approach recognises the particular importance of physical activity in supporting concentration and emotional regulation, especially for pupils facing social and emotional challenges. We also provide extracurricular sports and physical activities that foster teamwork, discipline, and confidence, supporting both physical and social development in inclusive settings.

4 - Spiritual Development

Spiritual development is deeply embedded in the life and ethos of Sacred Heart, with Christ at the centre of all we do. We promote the understanding and practice of Catholic beliefs and values, but we also nurture spirituality in all pupils regardless of faith background, ensuring inclusivity and respect for diversity. Through daily collective worship, religious education, reflection, and opportunities to engage with nature and the arts, pupils are encouraged to explore meaning, purpose, values, and a sense of awe and wonder. This spiritual dimension supports pupils’ emotional well-being and helps them develop a compassionate outlook towards others, grounded in the gospel values of love, kindness, and friendship.

5 - Moral Development

Moral development at Sacred Heart is integral to our Catholic mission and school values of love, fairness, happiness, kindness, and friendship. We actively teach pupils to distinguish right from wrong, to understand the impact of their choices, and to act with integrity and compassion. Our inclusive community emphasises respect for all and responsibility, linking moral learning closely with social and spiritual development. Through stories, role models, curriculum themes, and real-life experiences such as community service and charitable activities, pupils develop a strong moral compass that guides their behaviour and relationships, preparing them to be conscientious citizens of the future.

6 - Cultural Development

Sacred Heart’s culturally rich and diverse community is celebrated and woven through our curriculum and school life to provide pupils with a broad understanding and appreciation of different cultures, histories, and traditions. With 32 languages spoken and over 21 nationalities represented, we foster an environment where cultural identity and heritage are valued and shared. Our curriculum incorporates multicultural literature, art, music, and history, ensuring pupils experience the ‘best that has been thought and said.’ We also provide experiences beyond the classroom through visits, visitors, and participation in local and national cultural events. This approach helps pupils develop a strong sense of belonging, respect for diversity, and a global outlook, equipping them with the cultural capital needed to navigate and contribute positively to a diverse society.
