Wigan Authority have published their Local Offer document and the intention is to offer choice and transparency for families, as well as providing a resource for professionals to detail the range of services and provision locally.

At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Leigh we aim to meet every child’s needs to ensure that they achieve to the best of their ability.  As parents you may have questions to ask about what our school has to offer and how we support your child.  The following information will explain what provision we offer with regards to your child’s education, health and care needs.

 

How does the school know if children need extra help?

 

All the children’s progress, academically, socially and emotionally is regularly monitored by teaching staff and the Senior Leadership Team within school.  Class teachers complete ongoing assessments daily and weekly and formal assessments are completed termly to check a child’s progress and achievement.  If the class teacher is concerned that a child is not making as much progress as expected then this is raised with the Senior Leadership Team or Inclusion Manager whose role it is to oversee additional needs  support and provision in school. Following these discussions a plan will be put into place, if necessary, with regards to support and interventions needed for the identified children. 

What should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs or needs extra help?

If you have concerns or worries about your child then you should firstly speak to your child’s class teacher.  The class teacher can then share information on how they are doing in class and any support they may be receiving.  If appropriate, the class teacher may feel it necessary to arrange a further meeting with you as parents alongside support from the Head Teacher Mrs. Ahmed, Deputy Head Mrs. Warner or our school Inclusion Manager Mrs. Pasquill.  Our school Pastoral Leader and Learning Mentor Miss. Sanders and Mrs. Davies are also available to speak to parents with regards to other concerns you may have such as attendance, health or care issues.

 

How will school staff support my child?

Class teachers are required to plan a curriculum that meets the needs of every child within their class.  However, if a child has been identified as having additional needs and requires provision that is additional to or different from that received by most children in the class then an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may be developed with specific targets, outcomes, resources and support highlighted for the child.  This IEP will be completed by the class teacher and shared with the child, support staff, parents and Inclusion Manager.  IEP’s are reviewed regularly and updated or changed as appropriate. 

We support children with additional needs through a wide range of interventions and strategies.  These interventions may be on a one-to-one or small group basis and are run by qualified support staff.  We also access further support from Wigan Targeted Education Support Service, Educational Psychology Service, Startwell, Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS), Sensory Support Service Team, Speech and Language Therapy Team, Special Educational Needs and Disability Service (SENDS) and Child and Mental Health Service (CAMHs) if the need arises.  These outside agencies offer expert advice and support for our school, children and their families.

Our school also has a designated SEND Governor who meets with the Head Teacher and Inclusion Manager to discuss SEND within the school. 

At the beginning of the Autumn and Spring term the Head Teacher, Inclusion Manager and Learning Mentor meet with the Educational Psychology Service, Targeted Educational Support Service and Ethnic Minority Achievement Service to identify any children needing support and to prioritise their needs. 

 

How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?

Through ‘Quality First Teaching’, Sacred Heart, Leigh provides a curriculum to meet the needs of all children.  This means that we use a wide range of teaching and learning styles and that learning objectives are set for all children so that the curriculum matches their needs.  We strive for all lessons to offer the support and challenges necessary for each child to learn and differentiation occurs through the variety of activities set, resources available, support given to the children and by expected outcomes.

 

How will I know how my child is doing and how will you help me to support my child’s learning?

At Sacred Heart we strive to develop good relationships with you as parents and carers in supporting your child and helping them to achieve their full potential.  Staff are always available to meet with you before and after school for brief discussions but sometimes it is best to make an appointment with your child’s teacher so that appropriate time can be given to you.  In the Autumn Term we have an open evening so that you can come into school and meet your child’s class teacher and find out how they have settled into school and how they are progressing with their new curriculum and routines.  Following assessments we also have Parents Evenings in Autumn and Spring to share how your child has made progress with their work and what targets they are working on throughout the curriculum.  In the Summer Term we send out our annual school report which will inform you how your child has progressed and what they have achieved throughout the year. 

 

In addition to the above, children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan will have an Annual Review where we meet together to review and consider progress made throughout the year and to plan the next steps as appropriate. Parents of children who have had assessments or support from TESS and other services will also be invited into school to discuss progress and planned provision for their child.

 

What support will there be for my child’s overall well-being?

Here at Sacred Heart our Mission Statement and strong Catholic ethos underpin the heart of everything we strive to provide.  We aim to ensure the development of the whole child through God’s love, learning, growth and friendship.

Staff work closely together to plan and deliver support for all children’s academic, social, emotional and physical needs.  Our school Learning Mentor works hard to provide specific support for children and their families should they need it with regards to issues such as: attendance, bereavement, parental support and mental health.  We endeavour to provide appropriate support for all children and their families.

If your child has a specific medical need we will complete an Individual Health Care Plan with you to ensure that your child’s medical needs are appropriately supported.  We also have a medicine policy which all staff follow to ensure that medicines can be administered at specific times throughout the day.  Staff regularly take part in first aid training as well as training in specific medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, asthma and anaphylaxis.  Staff training is reviewed and updated to include new staff or any specific requirements.

Our school curriculum enables your child to develop their social and emotional skills and encourages them to learn respect, tolerance, empathy and care for others.  We offer a wide range of activities such as educational visits, residential trips, visitors in school and we have strong links with our Church and local community.  We also provide a wide range of after school activities such as parent-child challenges, sport clubs, breakfast club and holiday clubs.

Your child is well supported at unstructured times such as playtimes and lunchtimes with fully trained staff.  Our Learning Mentor and Deputy Head work closely with the welfare staff to ensure that they are aware of children’s specific needs and appropriate training is provided for this.  A variety of activities and resources are used to promote appropriate behaviour and ensure that children are making effective use of their free time.

We have a well-developed behaviour policy which was written in consultation with staff, governors, children and parents.  Our system ensures that any issues that arise are dealt with appropriately and effectively.  We also work closely with outside support agencies to provide further support should the need arise.  Parents are kept informed of any issues where appropriate and we work together to ensure that each child at Sacred Heart feels happy and supported throughout their time here.  Exclusions are rare and are only considered when all other avenues of support have been unsuccessful.

Children’s good behaviour, hard work and achievements are recognised and celebrated throughout school and this is done through assemblies, display work and golden time.  We also reward our children with our merit and ‘smiley face’ systems where children receive stamps and stickers, certificates and prizes. We actively encourage children to feel proud of all their achievements and progress.

 

Our school attendance policy promotes the importance of good attendance in enabling your child to achieve their full potential.  Attendance is regularly monitored by our Learning Mentor and she will work with families who have difficulties to ensure that improvements are made.  We also access support via outside agencies such as Family Welfare and Startwell if improvements are not made and further action is needed.  We celebrate good attendance in school and children are rewarded with certificates, awards and prizes.

 

What training are the staff supporting children with SEND had or are having?

Staff are regularly trained in the curriculum as well as with specific interventions that support children’s learning, social, emotional, physical and mental health needs.  We work closely with a wide range of services to provide further support or specific support as appropriate. 

Staff are also trained in a range of interventions that support learning, medical and sensory needs, behaviour and emotional needs.  If a child has a specific need we ensure that staff are trained as appropriate, this includes teachers, teaching assistants and welfare staff.

We have training in Team Teach, Child Protection and Safeguarding to ensure staff can deal and work through difficult and sensitive issues.

 

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by school?

We access specialist support and advice through our Targeted Educational Support Service (TESS), Educational Psychology Service, Sensory Support Service, Speech and Language Therapy Service and a school counselling service.

 

How will my child be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

We are an inclusive school and actively encourage and support all children to participate in the wide range of activities we provide both in and out of school.  We will support children and their families in accessing all opportunities available and where necessary will provide additional support to enable this.  Parents are fully informed of any trips and activities available through letters, SMS text service, e-mail and our school website.  First aid equipment and medicines are taken on every trip and a risk assessment is completed before each visit.

How accessible is the school environment?

Sacred Heart School is a modern building which is fully wheelchair accessible and has a number of accessible toilets and facilities.  We have a variety of interactive and technological resources including iPads, computers, laptops and interactive whiteboards and screens.  Classrooms are well equipped for children who have specific needs and we regularly update resources so that all children’s needs are met.

At Sacred Heart we take pride in the support and resources we have for children with English as an Additional Language.  We work closely with the EMAS team in developing access and support for these children and their families.

 

How will the school prepare and support my child to join the school, transfer to a new school or the next stage of education and life?

Our Early Years staff work as a unit and meet with nurseries, children and their families prior to them starting school.  We invite you to our ‘INSPIRE’ sessions where you and your child can take part in a variety of activities in the classroom and we also have a New Intake meeting where information is shared with parents about our school, daily routines and arrangements prior to starting in the Autumn.  New starters in Reception first join us part time to allow them to settle in and become familiar with routines.

Transition between classes is supported well via opportunities for your child to work with their new class teacher prior to moving.  If a child has specific needs then arrangements will be made in advance to enable more time and appropriate support for them in order to make their transition as smooth as possible. 

The Year Six staff work closely together in developing a transition programme for the children as they prepare to move to high school.  The children will have opportunities to visit their high school and become familiar with new routines and expectations prior to starting.  Children with specific needs are offered extra support and visits once their place has been allocated.  We will also invite parents in to discuss arrangements so that they are fully aware and involved in their child’s transition and give them the opportunity to discuss concerns they may have. 

If a child joins our school mid-year then appropriate arrangements will also be made as soon as possible to ensure that transition is as smooth as possible.

Staff work closely together at Sacred Heart to ensure that your child is secure and happy as they make their transition to the next stage in their school life.

How are the school’s resources allocated and matched to children’s special educational needs?

Each year SEND is allocated an amount of money from the school budget.  This money is used to support children who are identified as having additional needs.  We have a wide variety of resources available and we regularly review the effectiveness of them and update them as and when appropriate.  If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan then they are allocated funding specifically for their area of need and this will be used to provide named support or specific equipment and resources.

 

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child will receive?

Our school curriculum is differentiated so that we can meet the needs of all the children through a range of teaching and learning styles, resources and apparatus as well as support staff working with small groups or one-to-one.  Regular assessments take place each term so that your child’s progress and achievement can be monitored and this information is put onto our school tracking system. The tracking system allows us to review and check the children’s progress throughout the year and identify children who are not making the expected progress.  If a child has been identified we will ensure that appropriate support and interventions are put into place to help them back on track.  If a child is still not making appropriate progress following support and interventions or if we have concerns about a specific need or behaviour then we will access further advice and support from our TESS team.  If we feel that further intervention is required then we will contact parents to discuss this and advise them of the process.

 

How are parents involved in the school?  How can I be involved?

At Sacred Heart we believe that a good working relationship between school and parents is vital in enabling children to achieve their full potential.  We actively encourage parents and carers to be involved in their child’s education in a variety of ways.  Parents are invited into school for open afternoons, parent evenings, parent workshops, class assemblies, school plays and parent-child challenges. 

We also have our ‘Friends of Sacred Heart’ group in which parents and carers are invited to help and support our school through a variety of events.  The group meets on a regular basis and work together with staff to discuss concerns and plan fundraising events.  We keep parents and carers informed on a weekly basis via our newsletter and our school website also informs you of events and important information you need to know.

Our school governing body is made up of representatives from our school, parish and parents.  The governing body play a vital role in the running of our school and are actively involved in supporting the staff and children.  Governors are also available throughout each term to meet with parents to discuss any concerns they may have.  This is advertised on our newsletter and school website.

Staff are available to meet with parents before and after school to briefly discuss any matters you may have.  However, we do encourage you to make an appointment so that appropriate time can be given to you.
