Class 6

The teachers in Class 6 is Miss Lawton.

The Teaching Assistants working with lower key stage two are Mrs Taylor, Mrs Houghton, Mrs Eccleston, Miss Dale and Miss Pattinson.


Reading - Children should bring their reading book into school each day. Children should read at home each night and this be signed by an adult.


Homework - Given out each Friday to be returned by Wednesday. The homework set consolidates the work we completed during the week in school.


Spellings - Given out each Friday for a test on Friday



Number and Place Value

Children will learn to:

Count from 0 in multiples of 4 and 8

Can from 0 in multiples of 50 and 100

Find 1, 10 or 100 more or less than a given number

Recognise the place value of each digit of a number with hundreds, tens and ones

Compare and order numbers up to 1000

Compare and order numbers to 1 decimal place

Read and write numbers to 1000 in numerals, digits and words

Round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000

Find, show and estimate numbers using objects and pictures

Addition and Subtraction

Children will learn to:

Add and subtract numbers mentally including ones, tens and hundreds from a three digit number

Add and subtract numbers using formal column methods

Estimate the answer to a calculation and use this and inverse operations to check answers

Solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value and more complex addition and subtraction


Multiplication and Division

Children will learn to:

Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables

Multiply 2 digits and 1 digit using formal methods

Derive and use doubles of all numbers up to 100 and their corresponding halves

Calculate multiplication and division problems, mentally using the times tables, including two digit numbers times one digit numbers

Solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division, including factors and correspondence.


Roald Dahl

During the Roald Dahl topic children will learn the expressive use of rich language to convey characters, stories, rhymes and humor.  We will focus his shorter stories and rhymes – The Enormous Crocodile, George’s Marvelous Medicine, The Twits and Revolting Rhymes.

Children will learn to:

Enhance their awareness of Roald Dahl, his work and style

Develop their understanding of organising texts, descriptive writing, inverted commas, time and cause words (adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions)

Study rhyming and exceptions words



During this topic children will look at the book Iron Man and focus on language, characterisation and themes, considering how the book sites alongside traditional fairy-tale genre books.  We will then move on to looking at non-fiction texts about robots, using this as a stimulus for developing new and effective vocabulary and in children’s own non-fiction texts.  We will then move back to creative writing, facilitating the careful production of a story and a poem around the robot theme, with opportunities for children to critically review their own work, consolidating the vocabulary, grammar and punctuation learned through the robots topic.

Children will learn to:

Develop understanding of words with irregular spellings

Correctly use pronouns, possessive apostrophes, construct new words using prefixes

Use time and cause words – in particular adverbs for describing movement.

Use a dictionary effectively


Animals, including Humans

During this science topic, we will identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat.  As well as this we will identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement

Religious Education

Following the Come and See Topics will allow Year 3 to learn about;

Family - Homes – during this topic we will focus on life as a gift, myself as a unique and loved creation, the creative love and care that can be expressed in family groups


Belonging - Promises – during this topic we will focus on the call to belong, the creative potential that belonging develops; and Baptism and Confirmation, sacraments of the gifts of Gods life and friendship


Loving - Visitors – during this topic we will focus on the capacity for entering into loving relationships and the perfect gift and revelation of God’s love, Jesus, born of Mary, born as one



Children will receive one piece of maths, spellings and handwriting every Friday, which is due in the following Wednesday.

Children are also now expected to read as part of their homework.

Miss Lawton

We have been using a database program to make our own database.  We then started to answer questions and last of all made our own questions, by using the information we have found.

We have learned how to use excel, resize columns, make and change graphs, learn computer jargon and sort information.
